New this year • The State Auto headquarters building has been enhanced with even more lights, garland, and wreaths, in addition to six 10-to-12-foot tall nutcrackers which are visible five stories above Broad Street. • The Columbus Children’s Choir will perform at the lighting in a new performance area in Pein Park at the corner of East Broad Street and North 11th Street. • A scene depicting the Annunciation has been added to the historic Nativity display.
The State Auto Insurance Companies ushered in the Christmas season with the lighting of their Christmas display and life-sized Nativity on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 5:45 p.m., preceded by a performance by the Columbus Children’s Choir. The display is located at 518 East Broad Street, next to the Museum of Art in downtown Columbus.
Display construction is coordinated by State Auto associate JoAnn Huntwork, who earned a BFA in ceramics from Ohio University. Huntwork oversees the design and maintenance of all display figures and backdrops, and works with State Auto’s facilities staff who erects the display. A new 12-foot scene of the Annunciation has been added to the display this year.
A special platform with several figures from the display is set-up nearby to provide a safe and convenient photo opportunity for visitors. Also located to the east of the building is a large display of special Christmas artwork created by the winner of an annual art competition conducted with students from Deshler Elementary. This year’s winner is Deshler fifth grader Tia Pace, who helped light the display.
Last year, visitors to Christmas Corner – the name given to State Auto’s Broad and Washington Street location in the early 1930s – were treated to the Nativity as well as new building decorations reminiscent of past State Auto displays. Six 10-to-12-foot tall nutcrackers have been added to the roof, joining the more than 1,200 feet of garland and 7,000 LED lights that adorn the building.
Local singing groups will perform at the display weekends throughout December. The choir stage has been moved to an attractive and more sheltered performance area in Pein Park at the corner of East Broad and North 11th Streets. All performances begin at 7 p.m.
